Mainly because when I started drawing in high school it was all about developing the skillset of, you know, “being good at drawing.” I focussed on drawing musicians because it would get the kids around me to take interest in what I was creating, and that gave me some sort of illusion of accountability to get better. It was never about showing creativity or a thoughtful approach to art; it was simply just wanting my drawing to get closer and closer to the photograph. I never considered myself creative or an “idea” person. I wasn’t the artsy kid in high school, I just had a skillset that I could obsess over; which is why I went to college to be an Architect and not an Artist. I think it's hard for most artists to describe, in words, the world they are trying to build or the "brand" around the art they are creating because we show it to you...and we prefer it that way. At least I do. I follow the music I’m listening to, the energetic burst of lightning I get in my chest when that Jay-Z double entendre hits. I follow the laughs I get from obsessively watching comedy podcasts all day every day. I follow the sentence that keeps repeating in my head over and over and over, with no idea what it means or where it came from. I follow the moods of every day life and just want to make them look as cool as I can. A little peek behind the curtain, as someone whose whole schooling and career has been based off of critiques and having to put story to the thing you make… often times the story comes after the making. But we’re told that the story, the concept, has to drive the outcome. I’m here to tell ya… yeah sometimes that’s the case, but I’d argue most of the time it isn’t. So I’m just here following the instincts I have and continuing down the path that I originally started out on which is just trying to make everything I create a little better than the last. I really wanted to pay homage to the design process through an architectural lens. I used clear mylar to be stitched on as the Jordan hang tag and used a matte tracing paper for the support wing. The support wing or lace tab, which ever name your prefer, always reminds me of a speed square so I knew I wanted to get technical with the details! The Monarch was the sneaker that the two of them bonded over and would forever be a symbol of their relationship. I’ve always been a fan of Travis Scott’s music &amp; especially the overall creative direction of his brand, so I was excited when this request came in. This was the first sneaker I painted that had a pattern design on the OG, so recreating that in my own way was fun and a challenge. It ended up creating so much dimensionality and I was happy with the final product. I painted this one because I wanted to take on the challenge of the snake skin. Originally, I had the plan to hand stitch the texture, which I did, unsuccessfully. It ended up being the most obvious element on the canvas, when really it should be a second read. So, I took some time to sketch out the execution and decided that it would be a palette knife and ink pen approach. I love the idea of showing the actual process of the painting on the painting itself, so I stitched on part of the paint palette that I used on the upper right corner. The OG yellow HU NMD has been my favorite of the line because I just feel like “human race” on the top of the sneaker was so impactful and had such great double meaning. This was the second sneaker painting I created in this series (not including a Yeezy that was a total flop, but great exploration) and the first painting that I ever gridded out before starting. I used to think that gridding out art was cheating, don’t even get me started on using a projector, but quickly learned that I saved so much money on paint by actually just planning out the piece first. While I do look at this painting and think it’s executed well, there are things I would have done differently and maybe some things I would have taken a bigger chance on. To me, there’s nothing wrong with it at all but there’s also nothing hugely compelling about it, either? It’s a good painting. It got the job done. And it was actually supposed to be just a simple 8 1/2 x 11 sketch that my roommate wanted me to make for her. Quickly this escalated to us at Blick buying a huge canvas and me over the moon excited by the vision I had for it. I’ll never forget the feelings I experienced while painting this; frustration, passion, anger that I couldn’t get it right, and then absolute ecstasy when it all came together even better than I had imagined. (A pattern of emotions that has happened with every sneaker after.) In all of my work, especially in the recent years, I really explore the different internal worlds that we all have. Even my painting style is directly derived from my own internal world when I listen to / see music, so the words I found to put on this canvas have been something I come back to time after time. And it’s a quote from Philip K. Dick: “Maybe each human being lives in a unique world, a private world different from those inhabited and experienced by all other humans… if reality differs from person to person, can we speak of reality singular, or shouldn’t we really be talking about plural realities? And if there are plural realities, are some more true (more real) than others? What about the world of a schizophrenic? Maybe it’s as real as our world. Maybe we cannot say that we are in touch with reality and he is not, but should instead say, his reality is so different from ours that he can’t explain his to us, and we can’t explain ours to him. the problem, then, is that subjective worlds are experienced too differently, there occurs a breakdown in communication… and there is the real illness.” <img width="1125" height="2000" width_o="1125" And I’m not exaggerating. Okay maybe a little. The truth is, I’m a very analytical person while simultaneously thinking abstract and big picture. My instinct here would be to, in great length, tell you about my job as an Artist and my job as an Art Director and how they are, in my mind, completely separate roles. Art is one thing and design is another. (An arguable and annoying opinion, I know.) But actually, with the right projects and the right client, the two can be weaved together quite seamlessly. You’d think after that conclusion I’d allow them to mesh together in my head. But I don’t. 🌝️ “STUDIO.jjj” is a multidisciplinary design studio. It operates as the umbrella to all of my creative projects and collaborations; whether that’s in film &amp; tv, publishing, album artwork, commercial advertising, or the occasional brand identity. And emphasis on occasional brand identity; it’s gotta be the right project. It’s also funny for me to refer to my work as a ‘design studio’… after all, it’s just me running this whole thing. But depending on the project, there is always the ability to bring on someone who specializes in a certain area of expertise; whether thats a 3D artist, animator, web designer, etc. I can work within my network and we’ll make sure to cultivate the best art and experience possible! In time, I see this going beyond the 2D space. I graduated with a BDA in Architecture and a minor in Product Design, and while the beginning of my career landed me in a place far, far away from that, I hope to take on projects in the future that bring me back to my roots. (I want to reference “LA LA Land” here or “Wizard of Oz” but can’t find the right play on words. Maybe I’ll ask a copywriter.) You’ll see hints of an architectural discipline in my “SNKRS.jjj” series; to me they’re more products than paintings.
